Choose to transform rather than freeze.
Lots of businesses spend long periods of time in “status quo” mode. Things are running as normal, with normal gains and losses within an acceptable range. However, every business will eventually experience an unexpected change, whether that’s a leadership transition, an acquisition, or a global pandemic. Every situation will have its own unique challenges. There are two main responses any business can take: freeze or transform.
Businesses who freeze keep sticking with the same outdated model in light of new information and new circumstances. This causes damage to culture, processes, and growth that can take years to redevelop, and that’s if you can rescue them at all.
Instead, businesses need to transform when things get difficult, turning, “fear into engagement, execute with excellence, use the uncertainty as a time to actually increase trust, and help everyone in the organization prepare to do more with less.”
Use proactive language rather than reactive language.
As COVID-19 changes the way we do business, it’s also going to change the way we have to talk to our teams. But there are a few different ways these changes occur, and you’ve got to know which is preferable.
Reactive language is often our knee-jerk go. When things get tough, it can seem like we’re backed into a corner. Avoid using language that sounds like you have no other options. Consider rephrasing the way you talk about hard projects and difficult tasks.
Here are a few examples of how this looks in practice.
