Above the Cloud: An LSA Insider Interview with Boostability CEO Gavan Thorpe

On August 29, 2019, Boostability CEO Gavan Thorpe sat down for an interview the Charles Laughlin from Local Search Insider on his podcast Above the Cloud. Gavan and Charles talked about the current state of SEO, as well as the state of the industry as the digital age expands. Here are a few of the highlights. How did Boostability get started?

Gavan described Boostability as a company that “provides local SEO for small businesses at scale.” After beginning in 2009, the founders of Boostability decided to make SEO less of a big-company toy and more of a tool accessible to small businesses. While the company started out as a step-by-step SEO guide, Gavan quickly realized something. No dentist or plumber had any desire to do SEO themselves. That realization was the foundation of Boostability’s current business model.

Charles agreed, noting, “The biggest challenge [in the tech industry] is that small businesses have no time and inclination to engage with software or processes,” meaning companies are often tasked with coming up with ways to do it for them. “It’s a labor intensive process,” Charles said.

 

Is Boostability really affordable?

Charles also took the time to ask Gavan about Boostability’s affordability claims. While the organization initially set out to provide SEO at an easily affordable cost for small business, Charles inquired, “Is there a way to produce results at any budget?” Gavan explained that it depends. “Every small business could increase their web presence in some way,” Gavan explained, but reasonable expectations are key. “If a law firm in LA wanted to rank over its competitors in a market of that size, $50 a month just wasn’t going to cut it. But cultivating a better online presence in general was another story. “If you’re talking about increasing their online presence, we can provide value at nearly any budget,” said Gavan.

Does SEO really make a difference?

Even though SEO has been around a while, Charles acknowledged that making the sale can sometimes be difficult. When asked about the art of selling SEO, here’s what Gavan had to say: “SEO does a really good job of enhancing a customer’s presence on the web. If [the customer] has some businesses coming in, SEO is meant to take them to that next step. SEO is a critical component to online marketing, but it’s not the only component. When SEO is partnered with other online marketing tools, that’s when the results come in.”
