Katie McKinlay, First of Her Name, Leader of Orientations, Mother of Recruitment

With red hair to rival Ariel herself, Katie McKinlay has been a friendly face around the Boost offices for over half a decade. What started as a job in college has grown exponentially over the past several years, and most of our employees reading this will have met Katie at one time or another, because she most likely hired you! She sat down with and answered a few questions about her time as a corporate recruiter (and a few other ones too). Crack open a can of Diet Pepsi (you’ll see why in just a second!) and read on.

Katie McKinley collage.Quick! An elevator pitch! Tell us about yourself in 50 words or less.

I’m a redhead with an addiction to Diet Pepsi who thinks she’s much funnier than she actually is.

How do you explain what you do to friends and family, especially when they’re not familiar with tech or SEO?

Boostability helps small businesses succeed online! I recruit people to every department and team from Fulfillment to Sales to Development to the Executive level.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

Getting to recruit people to the best company around! I love finding such talented and skilled people and bringing them into our company. It’s exciting to see all the experience everyone contributes to Boostability and how each individual can make an impact!

Katie McKinley collageWhat do you like about Boost’s company culture?

I love everything about the culture here at Boostability. Being here for almost seven years, it’s been fun to watch us grow from a bunch of long card tables in the Wolverine Crossing office to this booming international company without losing our fun, start-up culture. Everyone person here contributes to the company and you as an individual matter. You’re not just another employee here.

Describe an on-the-job experience where you grew your skills or learned something new.

My whole 4 years on the HR team has been one big on-the-job learning experience. I’m able to get exposure to employment law, best practices, benefits enrollment, HRIS systems, etc. There is a lot of collaboration on our HR team and it’s been amazing to work with them and learn the specialties of each member of the team.

How has Boostability prepared you for your future or furthered your career goals?

I started at Boostability as a college job to just make money while I got through school. It has turned into a learning and growing opportunity that helped me to find what I love doing and the industry I want to be in. The internal growth in Boost has given me opportunities to grow and develop myself and launch my career in HR.

What’s your take on the digital marketing industry, especially from someone working in your particular role?

Digital marketing is essential to helping your business thrive! If you don’t have a strong web presence, it will be difficult to stay competitive. It really does make all the difference!

What do you like to do when you aren’t at work?

I love spending time with my family! My ideal day would be playing at the park with my little boy and then hanging around the house in comfy clothes, watching Netflix (Hulu, Disney+, Amazon Prime, etc.) with my husband, and eating 180 Tacos (the buffalo taco is the best thing you’ll ever eat).

What’s something unique about you that people couldn’t tell just by looking at you?

I love music. If I could spend all day on Spotify I would! Some of my favorite bands are Thrice, Coheed and Cambria, Manchester Orchestra, Frightened Rabbit, and Brand New.

If you could make a guest appearance on a TV show, what show would you choose?

I’m not an actor… at all. But if I had acting ability, I would have loved to play a role on Game of Thrones. It would be awesome to get to experience the beautiful set and watch everyone perform. Then maybe we could rally the cast and change the script for season 8.
