Tumblr is far from the most popular social media platform, but it is in the top 10. If a significant portion of your target audience is active on the platform, Tumblr for business may be a useful way for you to form new connections and improve engagement. This is particularly true if you’re looking to share creative content — which can be anything from long-form blog posts to short quotes, from photos to audio clips.

If your only presence online is through social media, Tumblr could be a good alternative to setting up a website. A page on Tumblr is far more customizable than a profile on most other social media platforms. You can do pretty much anything with your page and there is almost no censorship.

Either way, it is much faster than building a website, and you’ll find plenty of support within the Tumblr community. Plus, you can even purchase a domain name for your page to make it appear like a website.

There are excellent advertising opportunities on Tumblr for if you want to start gaining attention quickly. You have three options for ads:
- Sponsored posts. These are the same as normal posts (in that users can like and reblog them) with the difference that they also appear on non-followers’ dashboards. You can reach your audience by targeting according to gender, location, and interests.
- Sponsored video posts. As well as text-based posts, you can turn video posts into ads. These autoplay and loop. You’ll receive additional analytics about views, loops, and engagement.
- Sponsored day. This allows you to place an ad at the top of users’ dashboards for a full day. When users click the ad, they arrive at a page with content you’ve chosen, which can be your own posts as well as curated content.

How to Set Up Your Account
1. Create a New Account
To sign up for Tumblr, all you need is an email address, password, and user name. It is best to use an email address that users associate with your business, as people will be able to search for you this way.
2. Choose Five Categories
Once you’ve signed up, Tumblr will present you with various categories, like business, travel, science, and funny. Choose the five that best relate to your brand. Posts from these categories will appear in your dashboard for you to like and reblog.
3. Verify Your Account
Check your email for a link to activate your account. This will take you to your Tumblr page, where you can finish setting up your account.
4. Customize Your Page
Click on the pencil icon at the top of the page and choose “Edit appearance.” Start by picking the theme you want. This will change the font, colors, and size and location of your profile picture on your page.
Next, upload your profile picture. It needs to be a minimum of 128 pixels by 128 pixels. This picture will appear as a thumbnail next to your posts and on your page next to the buttons that enable users to follow you.
You’ll also need a cover photo for your page. This should be 1,600 pixels by 900 pixels.
5. Post Some Content
With your page set up, it’s time to begin posting content. On your homepage, you’ll see the option to create a text, photo, quote, link, chat, audio, or video post. If you decide to post an image, bear in mind that it will appear to users as 500 pixels by 750 pixels. Once you’ve created or uploaded your content, click “Post” to share it with the world. It will appear on the dashboards of your followers and on your page.
Setting up and managing a Tumblr account is quite simple. However, before you jump in and create an account, you need to decide if this is the best strategy for your business. For Tumblr to be worthwhile, you’ll need to active, responding to messages and comments and posting interesting content frequently.
