21 Oct Potential Google Update (Penguin?)
We have noticed a shift in keyword rankings, indicating that a Google algorithm change has occurred!
Boostability monitors over 60,000 keyword ranking changes for our customers. We monitor this data closely to anticipate major Google updates and analyze how these updates have an effect on our clients. By tracking so many keywords we can see major or even minor shifts in Google’s algorithms.
How do we know an update occurred?
Over October 20-21, we have noticed a major shift indicated by the image below. The graph below measures the variation of keyword rankings. If we see a lot of variation, our graph spikes. This means that a significant movement in keyword rankings has been found. Over the last two days, we saw an unusual amount of keyword fluctuation. We have seen this kind of spike with other major algorithm changes in the past, such as Penguin or Panda.
Based on timing from the past, we are due for a new Penguin update. That’s why we think these fluctuations indicate the beginning of this new algorithm change. We wanted to be the first to tell you all about it!
First and foremost, the change has been positive for all Boostability clients. To know more about these changes, you should know a little bit about Penguin.
What is a Penguin update?
” The goal of Penguin is to reduce the trust that Google has in sites that have cheated by creating unnatural backlinks in order to gain an advantage in the Google results. While the primary focus of Penguin is on unnatural links, there can be other factors that can affect a site in the eyes of Penguin as well. Links, though, are known to be by far the most important thing to look at.” – Moz.com
As you can see with the above image we saw nearly three times the amount of fluctuation than we normally do. This is also the first time in recent memory that we have had two consecutive days of high fluctuation. Most updates we notice only impact a single day.
So, what is this update? Is it the long-awaited Penguin update? As of right now there is no official name to this update. We will learn more about the update as we continue to monitor and listen for announcements directly from Google.
