Oh, Google+…I honestly think you are the most underrated social media platform right now. We’ve all seen the picture with the coffee or donut that jokes that the only people who post about those things on Google+ are Google employees. Although this is true in some ways, there are some aspects of Google+ that should be used by all businesses.

Local SEO

Do you want to know what pages get preference on Google? Those that have a Google+ account. Why would Google give preference to these businesses? Because businesses that have Google+ accounts are also on Google Maps. So remember this tip: if you have a brick and mortar location, you should be on Google Maps so you will show up in Google local searches.

Google wants their users to find value using their search engine in the least amount of time. So, if people use search terms like “nail salon Utah County,” Google assumes they are looking for a nail salon in their local area and does not display articles as the first search results. Instead, it displays businesses with locations on Google Maps and have a Google+ account so reviews come up first along with ratings and business information.

Google+ Communities

Google+ Communities are a super underrated feature. They are similar to Facebook groups but the users are much more active in the communities on Google+ than on any social media platform I’ve seen. And, like Facebook, Communities cater to markets of all sizes-from broad topics to niche markets. For example, if I was a divorce attorney, I could search “divorce communities” and be able to share my content on groups with over 2,000 members.

Now, be forewarned, there are rules that go with each group and some nuances you’ll want to know. If you’re interested in using Communities, I suggest you watch this YouTube video to get a better idea on how to use them.

Make Google Happy

Understand that the more active you are on Google+, the more likely Google will improve your website’s ranking in search results. Google wants their platform to be used. So if your company is using Google+, it will make Google happy.

For no other reason, your business should use Google+ just to get your business more traction online. You will need to verify your website (which is simple to do) and it will create a place where Google users can easily find you and your business information.

    I love this. I get many eye rolls when I come to businesses being on G+. “There are never any followers. It’s useless.” And then I show them the rest of the numbers like their visibility, organic search, directions clicks, and direct calls clicks.

    Headline reads “Pros & Cons,” but I don’t see any cons…? That would’ve been really helpful; pros from start to finish doesn’t give me a lot of room to make my own decisions about whether and how to use Google+, just tells me that you like it. Also, if you’re gonna promote your work and boost your own SEO by including a link to a video that you made, maybe you could be honest about it. Nothing wrong with using yourself as an adjunct expert, but it’s kinda shady not to mention that you’re the adjunct in question.
