The title is displayed in the title bar and tab of web browsers such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, Google Chrome, Safari, and others. Search engines index pages based on the words they contain. Including a descriptive title can help the search engines determine what the pages are about.

Your website and every website is like a book, they all need chapter titles. Each webpage is like chapter in that book. A good example would be the “” website. On the homepage, the page title is “News, Rumors & Analysis on the Phillies, Eagles, Flyers & 76ers!”

Whenever possible, ensure each page has a unique title that describes the page well. On each of’s page they have a unique page title that lets the search engines know what the webpage is about.

For instance, a recent post stated the page title as “Did Jayson Werth Sell His Soul to the Nationals?” So if you are looking for the Nationals or Jayson Werth the page will have a higher probability of pulling up in a search. The best part is that Google uses the page title tag in its search results. The searcher will see the title and hopefully will become a visitor.

This simple tip for visitors helps search engines too. Search engines often use a page’s title in the search results. “Welcome to my site” may not be the best to entice searchers to click on your site in the results quite so much as “Eagles-Texans Halftime Analysis”.

 While technically not a meta tag, this tag is often used together with the “description.” The contents of this tag are generally shown as the title in search results (and of course in the user’s browser when visiting the page or viewing bookmarks).

I usually keep the page title at no more than 65 characters and make the page description relate to the page title and the content on the site. Doing these things will allow for better visibility of your website.
