When trying to get your website to rank well in the search engines you need two things: quality back links and awesome content. Today I want to focus on content and help you understand how much is needed for keyword ranking. There are two parts to this answer, length and keyword density.
In regards to length, there is no specified amount of content needed for a good website. It might be four hundred words, it might be ten million. Think about what the search engines are designed to do. Their job is to help users find answers. So ask yourself, how much content will it take to answer your visitor’s questions? A website with ten words probably can’t provide the same in-depth answers that competitors with thousands of words can. Now that doesn’t mean that your job as a website owner is to write a novel, but you should write enough content to provide the information your visitors need.
Now let’s talk about keyword density. We know that the websites with the best keyword ranking are not always the ones with the most content. Instead they are the ones that the search engines deem as the most relevant. So instead of asking “How much content is needed for keyword ranking?” You should be asking “How should I write my content to improve keyword ranking?” and that’s where keyword density comes into play.
If the keyword you are trying to rank for is “Keyword Ranking” then you had better mention the phrase “Keyword Ranking” as often as you can without sounding stupid. If you have a thousand words scattered throughout your page and you never mention “Keyword Ranking” then the search engines are going to look at you and say “Gee, they sure talk about a lot of things but, they don’t talk about keyword ranking as much as these other guys, so I’m going to place them lower on the search results.”
So in the end it’s not a matter of how much content you need for keyword ranking, but rather how much good content you have. The answer is not as simple as we would like it to be. There is no hard and fast number of words that determines a good website. A good salesman knows as much as possible about his product and is not afraid to discuss it at length with any customer. A good website should have that same wealth of knowledge available and share it with any visitor.
